By supporting this raffle, you will help the Leschenault Catchment Council raise $9,000 to keep a vital citizen science food monitoring program going strong. Since 2020, this program has empowered our local community to contribute to protecting the health of the estuary. With a very limited number of tickets available, you have a fantastic chance to win one of three amazing prizes—all while supporting critical research for the health of the Leschenault Estuary and the birds that rely on it.
What is the Shorebird Project? All raffle proceeds directly fund our Shorebird Project—a dedicated initiative building an essential long-term dataset on food availability for migratory and residential shorebirds that inhabit the estuary.
Initially funded by Tronox, the project took a brief pause in 2022 before making a strong comeback in 2023 and 2024 through our Lotterywest funded Leschenault Estuary Connect Program. The project is delivered through a partnership between LCC, Birdlife Bunbury and researchers at Edith Cowan University.
Each year, enthusiastic citizen scientists roll up their sleeves to collect sediment samples across the Leschenault Estuary. These samples head straight to Edith Cowan University, where volunteers help sort through them for macroinvertebrates—the essential food source keeping our shorebirds fed. ECU researchers then identify the collected species, providing vital data to track the overall health of the estuary’s ecosystem.
The Leschenault Estuary supports the incredible journey of migratory shorebirds arriving every September to refuel before their long migration north to breed, as well as resident shorebirds that reside in the estuary all year.
This hands-on project offers a deeply rewarding way for the community to connect with nature and contribute directly to conservation science.
