Shepparton Foodshare provides a central hub to distribute nutritious and culturally appropriate food for free to people experiencing food insecurity.
Established in 2012 due to community need, Shepparton Foodshare has seen an alarming increase in need for its service. Financial year to date Shepparton Foodshare has distributed 40% more food than the same time last year - more than 500,000 kilograms of food has been distributed financial year to date (equivalent to 1 million meals). The previous two-years Shepparton Foodshare saw a 30% increase each year.
Registered agencies collect our food for the people they support. Shepparton Foodshare is unique locally, there is no other agency offering the same services. It is not only integral in our region’s daily food relief needs, it also plays a vital role in getting food to people during times of emergency and crisis such as pandemic and natural disasters.
Shepparton Foodshare’s role as a food collection, warehousing, redistribution service provides a hub for those wanting to donate and those needing food for the people they support.
Food is distributed to registered agencies on the proviso it’s provided to the people they support for free.
A small staff provides a sustainable, safe and coordinated environment for the busy service and team of more than 30 warehouse volunteers. Along with the positive impact of providing food to people that would otherwise go hungry and reduced landfill, the social impact flows to volunteers who benefit from/contribute to community resilience and connectedness.
Shepparton Foodshare is an active member of the Regional Food Security Alliance (RFSA) established to support community, place-based Food Relief Hubs in regional Victoria to reduce the inequity in food security between regional and metropolitan Victorians. Members swap/share excess food to assist with diverse supply, reduce waste and extend your support across regional Victoria.
