Star wouldn't be here without your support. Any vet would have euthanised her at first visit.
Found covered in thick matts and absolutely terrified, Star urinated all over her initial consultant and bit their gloves until her mouth bled.
Without someone to love - and pay for – her, she didn't stand a chance.
Thankfully Star was part of one of our TNR programs - undomesticated she had been desexed and returned to her street home - and also microchipped.
So, when she was found in terrible condition and great pain, her chip number brought Cat Adoption Foundation back to her rescue.
Within hours of returning to our care Star was under anaesthetic and being diagnosed. Her tongue and gums were so swollen and bleeding that it was impossible to tell if she had an ulcer which could be treated, or an aggressive cancer that could not.
Along with this, and thick matted fur, she had missing teeth, severe dental disease, fleas, anaemia and malnutrition.
We had to ask the hard questions - how can we determine if she's treatable? Even if she could be treated, being un-handleable, could we give her quality of life? What would she need, and could it be administered? Would she be happy in care during that time?
It's the hardest thing in the world to say goodbye to any of the kitties that we deal with - no one likes to make that decision.
On this day, in this moment, we decided to try.
Star was shaved and given intravenous antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and pain relief. Every possible intervention was administered in the hope she would have her second chance.
We knew that Star’s fur was matted because her mouth hurt too much for her to keep her beautiful fur clean. We knew that the malnutrition stemmed from being unable to eat well for the same reason. And fleas cause anaemia. If we could fix her mouth, we could fix everything.
At this stage Star is awaiting her next check up to see where her mouth is at. What we do know is, that after two weeks in care, she’s eating well - up to four meals a day of soft food - and has gained weight. She’s comfortable and not in pain. And her sleek black fur is beginning to grow back.
We are gaining hope every day.
You are the reason we can hope.
