Nicole Burgermeister is a sculptor based in the Latrobe Valley Victoria. Nicki is from a long line of horse “people” and as such has had a lifelong passion for horses. Together with her mother, Gwyn, they support 23 horses (including Project Hope Jasper, a super cute though sometimes naughty buckskin pony who had terrible laminitis and was on his way to the knackery when a lovely person intervened and surrendered him) in the lifestyle they deserve.

Nicki studied a Batchelor of Arts, “Visual Arts” from Monash University majoring in Sculpture in the 90’s. Life got in the way and after a nearly two decade break from art to pursue a career to pay for horse feed, recent retirement means she is now able to focus on her horses and her art. 

Nicki says “I absolutely need to be creating things! I sometimes feel sorry for my long suffering partner as he has to deal with my creative messes and collection of “Stuff” that I am constantly adding to. I have a tendency to hoard interesting bits and bobs, materials and any tools I think are necessary for sculpting and making what ever takes my fancy. I’ve renovated rocking horses (not restored as I can’t just restore I have to improve), sculpted in Limestone, customised breyer horses (I can’t believe how HUGE the customising hobby is in the US), sculpted with epoxy, wood and now added Deer Antler to the mix of materials.”

“I love working in deer antler, it is super tough and lends itself to fine detail. This particular piece is tiny! So small that I thought it needed to be mounted on a substantial base or it could be easily lost. I found a lovely round piece of marble that complimented the sculpture beautifully.” 

As you can imagine, the hours and skill involved make it a labour of love. It’s my pleasure to donate my “Labour of love” to Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria to help fund the massive labour of love that the volunteers consistently produce time after time when helping horses in need. Artist
