By supporting this raffle, you can help the Leschenault Catchment Council raise $9k to kickstart a new black cockatoo conservation project in the Leschenault Catchment. With very limited tickets available, you have a great chance to win one of three fantastic prizes, all while protecting threatened black cockatoos.
What is Project Cockatoo?
All raffle proceeds will be used to launch Project Cockatoo - an exciting new project dedicated to protecting the three species of threatened black cockatoo that call our region home: the Carnaby's, Baudin's, and the Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoos. These long-lived birds disperse seed, regenerate bushland and keep our ecosystem healthy. All three southwest species are now under threat. Habitat loss and fragmentation mean that without action, we could lose these birds from our skies within a generation. Protecting cockatoos means protecting the forests, waterways and landscapes that sustain us all.
Our project will be two pronged: Engaging our community in a community conservation program so landowners, our schools, our local governments and the wider community can play their part in protecting and restoring critical habitat for the three species of black cockatoo; and working with South West NRM, Birdlife WA, our regional partners and universities to coordinate data collection and surveying to better understand how black cockatoos use the landscape, and implenent landscape scale actions to protect these species. Through the project we will:
- Partner with local schools to create cockatoo refuges with nest boxes and planting cockatoo foraging plants.
- Work with landholders to replant cockatoo foraging flora and install nest boxes.
- Work with local government to protect priority vegetation critical to black cockatoo species and promote the planting of cockatoo-friendly plant species in urban and rural landscapes.
- Launch a strong awareness program to connect the community to the plight of black cockatoo species.
