"An ode to my father, Bruce"
Self-sufficiency is a shared value amongst the Johnston family in Billinudgel, New South Wales. Living in a small community outside of Byron Bay, my father Bruce Johnston and myself, Martin Johnston, worked together for 13 years as a two-man team, crafting a range of hand-built furniture and fittings for a variety of high-end architectural projects in the area. Employing only traditional methods to create each piece, no detail has ever been overlooked due to the, dedication and sense of responsibility my father, Bruce had for each project.
Upon receiving the devastating news two years ago that my father had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, my sense of self-sufficiency was deeply challenged as I have felt hopeless in the fight to help my father.
Crafting one of my signature pieces the "Custom Sideboard" made entirely from local and sustainably sourced Tasmanian Oak, my greatest hope is to draw funds and spread awareness to help put a stop to this insidious disease.
Martin Johnston Furniture is helping to raise much needed funds for the MND and Me Foundation. 100% of funds raised from tickets sold will go directly to the MND and Me Foundation. A not for profit organisation, that supports people and their families living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and delivers support programs and funds research into treatments and a cure for MND.
What is Motor Neurone Disease?
- Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive and a neurodegenerative disease that is quite rare. The nerve cells that help you move, talk, swallow and breathe eventually lose control completely.
- There is no effective treatment for MND and gives a very short life expectancy.
