About A Better Life for Foster Kids Incorporated

A Better Life for Foster Kids (ABLFFK) was founded in 2014 by Heather Baird, who herself grew up in foster care. ABLFFK works to improve short and long-term physical, educational and psycho-social outcomes for children in out of home care. Our aim is to preserve children’s dignity, improve their feelings of self-worth and lessen social stigma. We provide material assistance to children in care, as well as advocacy and support for carers to help them navigate the system. ABLFFK is unique in providing Crisis Cases containing all the clothing and essential items required for the first week of care, where and when carers need them, without administrative red tape. A Better Life for Foster Kids also provides: - Camping opportunities for family groups and individual children in care. - Furniture and equipment that foster and kinship carers need in order to take on a placement. - Housing transition packages – furnishing and stocking a house for children leaving care and victims of family violence. - Carer support through dinners and networking opportunities. - Advice and advocacy for carers, including to access services such as mental health supports. Long term, we are working to create a better out of home care system. Drawing on data from our programs and interactions with carers, we advocate to the State Government for fairer policies and to address gaps and barriers to kids in out of home care accessing appropriate care and services. We provide responsive and innovative solutions to help meet the gaps in the system, to work for better life outcomes for children and young people in out of home care.
