Newcastle's Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch Raffle

Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch (BEBL) aims to raise funds and increase awareness of prostate cancer to reduce the impact on Australian men, their partners and families.

It Starts with Why

Men living in regional and rural Australia are up to 24% more likely to die of prostate cancer than their metropolitan counterparts. Their access to medical advice and treatment can be severely impacted by the tyranny of distance, often resulting in delayed diagnosis leading to terminal outcomes.

A committee of Novocastrians dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer is spearheading this Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch inaugural event.

The Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch (BEBL) started in Shepparton back in 2009 after one bloke, Chris McPherson, found out he had incurable prostate cancer. Chris wanted to persuade other blokes like him – middle aged, and, perhaps not in peak condition – to take responsibility for their health and get tested.

Chris died from prostate cancer in 2015, but as he’d hoped, many hundreds of men have now benefited from early detection due to these events.

The lunches are now held in 20 locations around Australia and have raised more than $5.5 million for prostate cancer research and regional prostate cancer nurses. It is one of the largest community-based fundraiser for prostate cancer research in Australia with over 33,000 people attending since their inception in 2009.

Newcastle’s Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch will take place on 31st May at Mereweather Surf House. The event will feature guest speaker Jonathan Biggins, raffles and fun!
